Cricket 07

England’s uninspiring start to the Ashes might just get those of the Barmy Army who couldn’t travel to Oz thinking they could produce better than tourists.

Thankfully the timely release of Cricket 07 from EA Sports provides us with this opportunity.

In recent years EA’s offering at the crease hasn’t compared favourably with the popular Brian Lara franchise.

Well, much like England’s surprise Ashes victory last year, there may be a change at the top.

An overhaul of the controls now see you attempting the cover drive, and ever other batting stroke for that matter, with a dual analogue stick approach (Century Stick control system). This gives a greater amount of control of the slightest of nudges to the forceful four attempts. The left stick is used to chose a back or front foot approach while the right stick is used to determine power and timing.

Common sense change to make the game more intuitive? Yes, but the difference it makes to the gameplay is huge. Other controls will have you chasing after the slower ball as you go to meet it down the crease (R1) or lob it over the fielders (L1).

Tactics are an essential part of any cricketing sim and setting your fielders remains the key to ensuring your bowlers reap the rewards for the killer delivery.

The improvements continue; squads are of course fully licensed, the players’ likeness to many of the Ashes heroes has been enhanced and graphically the game looks good.

All in all, if the real deal isn’t enough to keep you up until the early hours this console version just might do the trick.
