There's something about football games and transferring programmers.
Many moons ago a famous Amiga game Kick Off 2 met its match when
the programmer jumped ship and produced his own rival game, Goal!
Now the Sports Interactive (SI) team behind the most famous football
management games of all time, the Championship Manager Series, have
left Eidos to set up a rival game.
SI Games retained the Championship Manager engine while Eidos kept
the brand.
Football Manager was launched relatively early last season. This
left the Championship Manager game chasing shadows and a desperate
attempt to catch up to the Football Manager launch.
Unfortunately this rush was all too apparent when the Championship
Manager 5 game was launched, unusually just before the end of the
2004-2005 season.
There is no previous history of the players or staff, this would
appear to be due to hastey production and release of the game rather
than a bug and subsequent patches may rectify this. However, the
release was also spoilt by several other bugs.
There are problems with the filter mode in player search, no reset
button exists. The match engine does also not compare favourably
and there is no commentary option. Most goals seemed to be scored
in farcical conditions reminiscent to something you'd see on a Goalkeepers'
Greatest Blunders DVD.
Championship Manager 5 beats Football Manager for speed but apart
from that there is a lot of work to do to catch up with Sports Interactive's
latest effort.
