This is mainly because of how easily distracted they are;

To see what can happen when people don't think,
There have been cases of young people in the South Tyneside area actually walking into the side of buses; they have walked into the road not looking because they have been texting. Funny perhaps, but it wouldn’t have been very funny if they had stepped out into the road as the bus was coming would it?
It doesn’t take long to text your mates, so if you really can’t resist texting them the latest gossip why don’t you stand still on the pavement and finish your text before you do anything else? This will also stop you walking into other people who wouldn’t be too happy either, I mean what would happen if you walked into a bunch of 6 charvas? This goes for stuff like playing snake on your phone, or playing on your gameboy as well.
Listening to your fave tunes is also big on the distractions list; remember part of the green cross code is stop…look… and listen! How can you listen if you are blasting your ears with the latest of your music collection? If you know that you are about to cross a road, take out your headphones, you can always put them in again later.
If you are walking along chatting away to your friends, or on your phone you should make sure that you look around every few seconds or so…it’s all common sense really!
Young people usually forget the importance of road safety, that’s why there are so many deaths and serious injuries in the 12 – 16 age group. At this age there are lots of ‘new’ things that you have to think about but you should never forget the importance of road safety, you don’t get a second chance after you have been run over!
