Seatbelts are designed to stop you flying into the dashboard or windscreen of the car you are in, it’s as simple as that! They are there for your protection, are not a fashion accessory and in the even of a crash can save your life! It doesn’t even take one second to put your seatbelt on. You might think that it’s cool not to wear one but what’s cool about hitting your head off a wall at 40mph?
A FEW FACTS
Think about this:
If you are in a car going 40mph, a thing called “inertia” wants it to keep going that way (comic?) you have your own inertia that is separate to the car’s, but since you are also goin at 40mph it feels like you’re moving along as one thing.
If the car you’re in suddenly hits a wall, the wall would bring the car to a stop, however, you’re speed would stay at 40mph. This means that if you didn’t have your seatbelt on, you would go flying through the windscreen at 40mph. Just as the wall stopped the car, it would also stop you, but not until you had gone through the windscreen first.
The LAW
If you are 14 or over, it is your responsibility to wear a seatbelt. If you are younger than this, it is the driver’s responsibility as well as yours.
