Did you know that, since October 2007, it is illegal for anyone to sell tobacco products to anyone UNDER THE AGE OF 18, this even includes vending machines which are found in pubs, cafes and other outlets in South Tyneside.
If you see one of these vending machines why dont you have a look at the messages around it, you should be able to see a message which clearly states "this machine is only for the use of people aged 18 or over" If you ever see one of these vending machines without a notice on or near it you should contact your local Trading Standards Officer who will make sure the owner puts one on the machine.
Tobacco products include cigarettes, cigars, loose rolling tobacco and rolling papers, and the law applies to both over the counter and vending machine sales.
Many young people dont realise the dangers of smoking cigarettes and tobacco until they are much older, did you know that the about 22% of 15 year olds say that they smoke regularly, that is nearly 1 in 4 15 year olds!!!!!This means that 22% of 15 year olds are putting their own lives in danger of becoming effected by diseases such as cancer if they continue to smoke.
