Every film has to be classified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), whose job it is to give each film an age rating e.g. U, PG, 12 and so on.
It is illegal for anyone to supply e.g. rent or sell any film or game to a person under the age that is on the box and the disc or cassette.
This only applies to DVD's, videos and computer games with the 12, 15 and 18 ratings. Anybody can buy/rent a DVD, video or computer game if it's got a rating of Uc, U or PG. At the cinema though, you might see a film with a 12A rating, this means that anyone who is 12 or above can see the film, but anyone younger than this must be with an adult that is over 18.
If you would like more information about DVD's, video and computer game classifications, have a look at the BBFC's young people's website by visiting www.cbbfc.co.uk
If you know of a shop which you think could be illegally selling products to young people you can report them confidentially on the free phone number 0800 093 5878.
